Last week Australian Prime Minister Julia Gillard made a speech in which she called conservative opposition leader Tony Abbott a misogynist for a series of comments he’d made in recent years. Gillard quoted a few including “Abortion is the easy way out” and “What the housewives of Australia need to understand as they do the ironing..”  Then Gillard mentioned how Abbott had been sexist toward her. “I was offended when [Abbott] went outside in the front of Parliament and stood next to a sign that said ‘Ditch the witch’ and then quoted Abbott saying: ‘If the Prime Minister wants to, politically speaking, make an honest woman of herself…’ The irony is that at the time of Gillard’s speech Tony Abbott was calling for the resignation of another Australian politician, Peter Slipper, over crude and sexist terms Slipper had made in text messages. Julia Gillard added: “If [Tony Abbott] wants to know what misogyny looks like in modern Australia, he doesn’t need a motion in the House of Representatives; he needs a mirror.”
