In this cartoon byTom Janssen of The Netherlands, it’s clear that Syria’sBashar al-Assad has a different notion of what ‘peace’ means. As violence continues along the Turkish border, hopes are fading that a UN-brokered ceasefire will take effect on Tuesday, April 10th.

On paper, Bashar al-Assad has agreed to a peace plan put forth by Kofi Annan, the UN and Arab League envoy to Syria.  But in practice, the embattled Syrian leader has done nothing to implement it. The plan calls for the withdrawal of heavy weapons and troops from population centers, humanitarian assistance, the release of prisoners, and free movement and access for journalists.  Cartoon by Gary Clement of Canada.
