It’s been just over two years since the revolution that toppled Egypt’s longtime dictator Hosni Mubarak. The transition to democracy has been anything but smooth and is affecting the country’s economy in drastic ways. Local businesses are feeling the pinch - especially those located near Tahrir Square. http://ow.ly/jiwch

Photo of the Day: An anti-Mursi protester holds a cross and a Koran at Tahrir Square in Cairo. Egypt’s liberal and secular opposition said on Wednesday it would back a ‘no’ vote in a referendum on a divisive new constitution promoted by Islamist President Mohamed Mursi, calling off a boycott as long as safeguards are in place for a fair vote. Here’s another cartoon by Egypt’s Doaa Eladl. Click on it and you’ll see a whole slideshow of her work — narrated by Eladl through an interpreter. I produced this slideshow in July 2011 after meeting Doaa Eladl at a cartooning conference in Washington, DC. At that time Eladl was ecstatic about Egypt’s revolution which had occurred only months earlier.
